History

Since 1962 our members have worked hard to build our club to the magnificent standard it is today. It is thanks to their efforts that we are able to enjoy the facilities, friendliness and culture that is our Rosebud Country Club.

Our original members were the people behind the building of the golf course that is now known as Rosebud Public, or Carrington Park.  This course was the first course in the area and was opened in 1956.  However, the mixing of a private golf club with a public golf course did not work out.  The private members then decided to build their own new course.

After extensive investigation the current site was selected.  It had been a pine plantation that was damaged by fire and then cleared. In 1962 the 184 acres that become the North course, were purchased on extended payment terms for $94,000.

The course was built by the members with some external contractors.  As there was little money available, many members donated time, marterials and money.  They also helped finance the construction cost at little or no interest.  The first nine holes opened in February 1964.  In about March 1965 the second nine holes was opened.

In May 1965 the old fibro cement Clubhouse burnt down.  It had been moved from Carrington Park about a year earlier.  A new Clubhouse was built and opened in October 1966.

It was a big decision and task to replace the kikuyu fairways with couch.  This was the basis for our splendid fairways today.

The main outlet pipe to Gunamatta passes through our property.  The access to this recycled water ensured the high quality year round presentation of our courses.

A parcel of 93 acres of land was purchased in 1970 for the South course.  The construction of the course was completed within 2 years to give us 36 holes. Initially the South course was completely separate and we had 2 courses North and South.

The layout was then changed to have all nines start and finish near the Clubhouse.  This gave us the flexibility to have 4 different 18 hole courses.

Our course has hosted major events, including the PGA Championship and final qualifying for the Australian Open.

The current main Clubhouse was opened in  1998.

Bowls has always been an important part of our club with the first green opened in 1969.  With the increased number of bowlers a second green needed to be built.  This was opened in 1975.  The third green was opened in 1991 to enable bowls to be played during the winter.

Originally the Bowls afternoon teas were served from a shed.  The Bowls Clubhouse was not opened until 1985 and was extended in the late 90's to service the needs of all our bowlers. It is now full of atmosphere and has its own bar.

As you can see from the above, Rosebud Country Club has been built by its members.  The "volunteer" spirit is still with us today in many aspects of the operation of our club.

The quality of our facilities, our financial strength and our friendly atmosphere all come from our inherited culture.  We intend to continue to develop these important aspects of our club in the years ahead.
