FAQ –  What does that mean?

Bowls – NOT lawn bowls!

– Team competition offered by another golf club to non-members
– Usually 4BBB aggregate (4 player team) or 3 person stableford aggregate
– Offers a chance to play at another course that may not be usually available

Match play – alternative form of play to “stroke” play

 – Some differences to the Rules of Golf compared with stroke play
 – Game played one-on-one with another player on a hole-by-hole basis
 – Usually takes handicaps into account

Pennant – interclub matchplay competition

– Usually A grade players
– Played “off the stick” – handicaps not counted

PMP – Peninsula Match Play

– Interclub matchplay competition
– Players usually matched so handicaps are similar & counted
– Played over 6-8 weeks, usually in autumn

GPV – Golf Peninsula Victoria

– Name of golfing district based on the Mornington Peninsula
– Organizes interclub challenges, matchplay (Pennant & PMP), district championships

Ready golf – relatively new playing technique to speed up play

– Sometimes goes against accepted “etiquette” of play
– If safe to do so, you may play your shot out of turn i.e. even if your ball is not the furthest from the hole and you are ready to play it

Monthly medal – major club competition each month

– Usually first Tuesday (mid-week) or Saturday (w/e) of the month
– Usually played as “stroke” rather than “stableford”
– Usually players “count putts” once on the green (side competition)

Board events – some annual club competitions are designated “Board events”

– Winner of a Board event competition has their name added to a Board displayed within the clubhouse

Captain – office bearer given the responsibility of organizing & running golf events

– One of the executive members of the ladies committee
– Promote & encourage all members in playing
– Represents women members at club level committee meetings
– Presents trophies after major competitions

Ambrose – may be played with 2,3 or 4 players

 – All players tee off then best placed ball is chosen and the others drop their ball within one club length
– Sociable, fun game that doesn’t affect handicap
– Sometimes has minimum number of drives per player
– May be played as a “drop-out” so the player of the chosen ball misses a turn to hit, which prevents the strongest player taking over the team

4BBB – stands for Four Ball Best (or Better) Ball

– Often played as stableford but may also be played as stroke
– Team of usually 2 players – two teams play together (hence 4bbb)
– Play your own game then best score of the partners is recorded for the team

Foursomes – also known as “pairs”

– Team of 2 who take it in turns to hit one ball
– Alternate tee shots – either odds or even numbered tees
– Stableford or stroke

Canadian – team of 2 who both tee off on every hole

– Choose ball in best position then both players alternate hitting one ball
